The Professional Placement version of the course is optional and is offered as an alternative to the standard version of the course. You’ll also develop your entrepreneurial skills, engage with social media platforms, and look at how radio is used for social and economic development. If you tailor your studies to radio you will cover traditional AM/FM broadcasting, as well as digital distribution. If your ambitions lie in setting yourself up as a freelancer with a focus on technical skills we will encourage you to develop your entrepreneurial and networking skills and engagement with social media platforms to establish a robust foundation to launch your professional career. This approach has allowed a number of recent MA students to progress seamlessly into professional production roles. The specialist television modules mirror industry approaches and therefore you will operate as a production team to complete assignments in both modules. If you have an interest in television production you will develop a detailed knowledge of how production processes work and will be encouraged to explore online content development and distribution. Throughout the course, you’ll be supported by academic staff that have vast amounts of experience in television and radio production, such as radio documentary producer Sam Coley and community radio researcher Siobhan Stevenson. You’ll also use your academic thinking to evaluate the current state of digital media, giving you the opportunity to reflect critically on your own performance. Professional practice is embedded into the course which will prepare you for a career in either the television or radio industries. From producing content in classes that airs locally to jobs and internships at major news organizations and media production facilities, the city of Houston is more than just our location-it is the lab in which our students hone their skills. Valenti School of Communication, students receive experience both inside and outside of the classroom. Hands on experience with industry partnershipsĪt the Jack J. Writing, producing, directing, and editing are all skills that will be honed at the Valenti School of Communication. In addition, editing and audio suites are available for students to use, all complete with all the necessary software to make any project look professional. The Funston Center hosts many of our media production labs, which give students the opportunity to work with the technologies needed to create successful productions. Funston Communication Center, a state-of-the-art media and content production facility that includes two production studios connected via a large control room. To help their training, our school is home to the Lance T. From film cinematography to broadcast news, there is no limit to what our students can do. We then hone their visual communication and oral presentation skills so that they have a solid foundation for any production career they pursue. Quite simply, our media production students learn how to tell a good story. Our media production students learn and expand on those areas to enter the workforce with the ability to understand how to tell a story that is compelling, visually attractive, and well-executed. That requires the unique ability of understanding how to tell stories that make people want to listen or see them- a skill that includes a healthy mix of creativity, critical thinking and technical skills. However, merely having a device capable of that process is different than understanding how to effectively use that device in order to reach your audience. Today, anyone with a cell phone holds in his or her hands a device capable of shooting, editing, and disseminating a message with the possibility of reaching a global audience.
